Witness says lied for former Senator Edwards to save campaign

GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Reuters) - The wife of the campaign aide who claimed paternity for former presidential candidate John Edwards' baby cried on the witness stand on Monday as she recalled why she let her husband say he was the father of someone else's child.

Cheri Young said Edwards, a former U.S. senator who was seeking the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, explained that the arrangement was necessary both to keep his campaign alive and to prevent his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, from finding out about the affair.

After the candidate convinced his mistress, Rielle Hunter, and the aide, Andrew Young, to go along with the cover-up, Cheri Young said she felt she had no choice but to follow suit.

"I didn't want the responsibility of knowing that because I didn't go along with this, that because I didn't want to try it, that the campaign would explode and it would be my fault and I would have to live with it," Cheri Young testified.

Her testimony opened the second week of Edwards' federal campaign finance trial in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Prosecutors accuse Edwards, 58, of conspiring with Andrew Young to solicit more than $900,000 in illegal campaign contributions from two wealthy donors as part of a plan to conceal the candidate's pregnant mistress from the media and voters.

Edwards, a former trial attorney who became a two-time presidential candidate and the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2004, faces possible prison time if convicted of federal election law violations, including charges of conspiracy, accepting illegal campaign contributions and making false statements.

Andrew Young, the government's lead witness, testified against his former boss for much of last week. On Monday, Young's wife reiterated details from his testimony, acknowledging that she used her maiden name to endorse checks totaling $725,000 from heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and deposited them in the Youngs' personal bank accounts.

Cheri Young said she questioned the legality of the arrangement. Through her husband's job as a fundraiser, she knew there were limits in how much an individual donor could provide to a campaign, she said.

'GET THE MONEY IN'

She said Edwards told her during a phone call that his campaign advisers said the payments were legal, and he ordered her to "get the money in" to assist Hunter.

"We were at a peak point" in the campaign, Young said. "And if I didn't do this to take care of this woman, the campaign was going down."

Edwards' defense says the Youngs used much of the donor money to help build themselves a $1.5 million home in North Carolina. The defense argues that Edwards committed no crime because the payments were of a personal nature to keep Elizabeth Edwards from learning of the affair and not to influence the election.

Prosecutors on Monday showed jurors bank records for the $38,000 in checks the Youngs wrote to Hunter between June and December 2007.

"We gave her a monthly stipend, which was per Mr. Edwards' request," said Cheri Young, her voice often filled with fury and disgust as she described the events that took place years ago.

She said the Youngs also allowed Hunter to live with them in North Carolina after a tabloid alleged that Edwards was having an affair.

They bought her a $26,000 BMW and then paid her $2,700 monthly rent and other expenses once she moved into her own place, Young said.

The Youngs and their three children eventually spent months traveling with Hunter to luxury locations around the country to further shield her from the media, Cheri Young said. Young said she didn't have a choice in where they went or whether she could return home with her children as she wished to do.

While Edwards was still a candidate, "there really weren't any options," she said.

The Science of Handedness

if you ever meet a perfect version of yourself constructed by aliens from radio transmissions, don't shake their hand.

For those who don't know, this refers to a story in the Feynman Lectures on Physics. Here's my version; I've taken some liberties.

Imagine you're on the phone with an alien who speaks English, except they don't know what "left" and "right" mean. You want to explain it to them so they know which tentacle they should use to shake the right-handed President's hand if they should ever meet. The alien can be anywhere in the universe, so you can't refer to stellar positions or similar, leading you to devise an experiment for them to perform.

Your initial attempts use gravity, electricity, and magnets, but you notice each experiment comes out essentially the same if you swap "right" and "left"--for instance, you could give the alien instructions for making a clock in hopes of defining "right" using clockwise rotation, except if the alien made the clock exactly backwards by reversing the notion of "left" and "right", they wouldn't be able to tell. A particle physicist happens by and tells you about a magical experiment involving the weak nuclear force that *does* distinguish left and right inasmuch as the experiment fails if the alien screws up "right" and "left" and succeeds otherwise. (For the curious, some more details here [lbl.gov] and here [wikipedia.org].) Great, problem solved.

"But wait!" the physicist says. "The alien needs to use regular matter instead of antimatter in the experiment. The results will be reversed otherwise! Come to think of it, I have no idea how to tell them the difference between matter and antimatter. If you ever meet them and they start trying to shake your left hand, RUN, since the alien will be made of antimatter!"

China reach in focus at U.S.- Philippine security talks

MANILA (Reuters) - China is likely to be high on the agenda at top level U.S.-Philippine security talks on Monday as Washington refocuses its foreign policy on Asia and Manila realizes its limits in trying to solve territorial disputes with Beijing alone.

China has maritime spats with several countries in the South China Sea, believed to be rich in oil and gas and crossed by important shipping lanes, and its neighbors fear its growing naval reach in staking claims.

Those disputes are pushing the Philippines to seek closer cooperation with the United States, which in turn has prompted China to warn Washington against getting involved, denouncing last week's U.S.-Philippine military drills as bringing the risk of armed conflict closer.

"I'm sure we need to be diplomatic, but I don't think we should tip-toe around the Chinese on this," said Walter Lohman, director of the Asian Studies Center with the conservative Washington-based Heritage Foundation think tank.

"...There is nothing new about the U.S. exercising with the Philippines. We shouldn't refrain because the Chinese don't like it. In fact, I expect the (Washington meeting) will come up with some agreement on increasing the frequency and variety of exercises, ship visits. Also expect agreement on hardware, joint use of Philippines' training facilities and bases."

The talks also coincide with a potential new source of tension between Washington and Beijing after blind activist Chen Guangcheng was reported late last week to have sought U.S. protection in the Chinese capital after an audacious escape from 19 months under house arrest.

On Sunday, China said it had made "stern representations" to the Philippines about its proposal for international arbitration over Scarborough Shoal, site of the most recent stand-off between the two sides.

"China urges the Philippines to earnestly respect China's sovereignty and do nothing to expand or complicate matters," the ministry cited Deng Zhonghua, head of its department of boundary and ocean affairs, as saying.

Manila's moves to strengthen security ties with its former colonial master coincide with the U.S. foreign policy "pivot" towards Asia to concentrate on, among other things, North Korea's nuclear ambitions and China's military buildup.

Twenty years after the Philippines voted to remove American bases, it now wants to give U.S. troops more access to its ports and airfields.

"We enjoy a really close military-to-military relationship with the Philippines and I think certainly coming out of this two plus two, we'll be looking for ways to improve and enhance that relationship," said Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain John Kirby, referring to talks between the defence and foreign secretaries, the highest-level security talks yet between the two sides.

"But it is safe to say that ... our relationship with the Philippines is part and parcel of the larger shift to focus on the Asia-Pacific."

A Philippine general familiar with the discussions to be held in Washington said the United States had a list of airfields in the Philippines that it could use for routine deployment of tankers, fighters and transport planes.

"These are not new bases for the Americans, these are still our facilities," said the general who declined to be identified. "They are only asking us if we can share some of our idle space with them."

Kirby said the United States wanted to continue "a rotational and training" relationship. "We're certainly not looking ... for permanent basing there."

This is nevertheless a sensitive area for Philippine President Benigno Aquino, some of whose political advisers are uncomfortable with an expanding U.S. role.

The U.S. plan to use Philippine airports is not new. At the height of U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan in the mid-2000s, Manila allowed U.S. military planes to refuel at an airport in northernmost Batanes province, close to Taiwan.

"We don't want them back, they create noise when most of us are already asleep," Budget Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad said of U.S. transport planes landing at night in Basco airport.

Abad is one of Aquino's closest political advisers. Another political adviser told Reuters Aquino would not allow a de facto basing arrangement.

"That's a violation of our constitution," he said.

Philippine foreign and defence officials, however, will use the Washington talks to try to get U.S. backing on its position in the South China Sea, invoking freedom of navigation.

"I think we would want all nations, including the U.S., to make a judgment as to what is happening there (in the South China Sea) and what the implications are to their own security," Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario has said.

A retired Philippine flag officer said Washington, which is shuffling and redeploying its forces around Asia, including in Japan and Australia, wanted to rebuild the "air bridge" between Northeast and Southeast Asia.

"They are trying to plug these holes when they left Clark in 1992," he said, referring to a former U.S. air base in the northern Philippines. "They need airfields more than ports because most of their tactical aircraft are based too far from potential hotspots in Southeast Asia."

Richard Jacobson, of Pacific Strategies and Assessments, cautioned both sides against playing the China card, saying he did not see naval standoffs in the South China Sea as dramatic enough to improve U.S.-Philippines relations.

"It appears more likely that any new strategic partnership will evolve gradually over time," Jacobson told Reuters.

Peter Jackson unfazed by 'Hobbit' footage pushback, but will stick to 24 fps for trailers

peter-jackson-hobbit-48fps-complaints-24fps-trailer

Calm down, cinema-goers. It just takes time to "settle in" to the strange new ultra-realistic world of high frame-rates, according to Peter Jackson, who's been responding to audience's rather strong panning of 48fps rough cuts from his upcoming 3D epic, Hobbit. Viewers' main beefs were the surprising appearance of the higher cadence footage, which almost looked like it was shot on video, as well as blemishes on actors and sets which were all-too-visible without the crutch of motion blur. But Jackson insists that the footage lacked special effects and color correction, and that the showing was perhaps too short to judge the frame-rate -- which is why he also says there'll be no 48 fps trailer. He even adds that he's now "very aware of the strobing, the flicker and the artifacts" when he's watching regular 24fps cinema -- so the real struggle for audiences might not be adjusting to the new way, but going back to the old.

British military seeking missile sites for Olympics

By Agence France-Presse
Saturday, April 28, 2012 16:29 EDT

?

Britain?s military is scouting locations in the capital including residential buildings to station surface-to-air missiles during this summer?s Olympic Games, the?Ministry of Defence?said Saturday.

?Ground-based air defence systems could be deployed as part of a multi-layered air security plan for the Olympics, including fast jets and helicopters, which will protect the skies over?London?during the Games,? a spokesman for the ministry said in a statement.

?Based on military advice we have identified a number of sites and? are talking to local authorities and relevant landowners to help minimise the impact of any temporary deployments,? he said.

The ministry has made no final decision on deployment of missiles, but is evaluating sites alongside police, the statement added.

Britain is mounting its biggest peacetime security operation for the?London Olympics, which start on July 27.

The statement was released after residents of an east London apartment block complained on Twitter of being told of a military and police deployment that might include missiles on top of their building.

Resident Brian Whelan, a journalist, told AFP he had been informed in a leaflet distributed Saturday by the gated private block?s management company of plans to station 10?military personnel?there for two months.

?They?re going to do a dummy run and if it goes well, there will be high-velocity missiles stationed on my building, along with soldiers,? he said.

?It seems like it?s completely written in stone ? there?s been no consultation. They announced it in a way that makes it seem like some kind of prize that I?ve won, to be living on an army base, which is insulting.?

The building in Bow, east London was apparently selected because it has an old watch tower converted into a lift shaft and is a 10-minute walk from the Olympic site, he said.

A security force of more than 40,000, backed by a huge intelligence operation, will guard venues, athletes and the millions of visitors expected to throng the British capital for the Games.

?Lone wolf? terrorist attacks are a major concern for security forces but a range of other threats are also being considered.

In 2005, a day after London was named host city, four homegrown suicide bombers attacked three underground trains and a bus, killing 52 people.

Dufner takes first PGA Tour win in New Orleans

AVONDALE, La. (AP) ? A first-time PGA Tour winner one weekend, a married man the next.

The spring of 2012 will go down as a memorable time in Jason Dufner's life.

Although it took pair of playoff holes, Dufner finally proved he could hold it together and make a mid-tournament lead stand up, making a birdie on his second extra trip down the par-5 18th hole at the TPC Louisiana to win the Zurich Classic in a playoff with Ernie Els.

"It's always really tough playing on Sundays whether you're in the lead or middle of the pack, and today I was fighting, trying to win an event, and I think I showed myself a good bit out there," said the 35-year-old Dufner, whose wedding is next weekend. "Ernie made a great run at me and it felt like with five or six holes (to go) we were probably going to be battling for the win."

Dufner, whose average score at the cut this season ranks second on the Tour, finished atop the leader board for the first time in 164 career PGA Tour starts.

Now if he can only figure out his honeymoon plans.

"The honeymoon is going to be at The Players Championship," Dufner joked about the event in two weeks at TPC Sawgrass. "They got an island green."

Dufner's fianc?e, Amanda Boyd, wasn't about to complain. Watching from behind the 18th green, she was tearful as Dufner finally made the clutch shots he needed to finish on top.

"It's awesome. He's been so close so many times. I don't feel like it's real," Boyd said. "It will be a good wedding."

Dufner said he was more nervous about his final putt of less than 2 feet than about his impending marriage.

"There's a been a good bit of pressure," Dufner said. "People talking about, 'Why aren't you winning? Why can't you close the deal? ... Friends, family, media, even people in my inner circle. And not in a negative way, but when you're leading tournaments going into weekends and you're finishing 24th, there's going to be some questions."

The win should also stamp out some of the bad memories haunting Dufner since the Masters, when he shared the lead after two rounds but faded to 24th.

Dufner lost playoffs last year to Mark Wilson in the Phoenix Open and Keegan Bradley in the PGA Championship for two of his three career runner-up finishes. He had held five previous leads through two rounds, including twice this year.

Entering the fourth round with a two-shot lead in New Orleans, Dufner shot a 2-under 70, while Els had a 67 to match Dufner for a course-record 19-under 269 total.

Both missed birdie putts within 8 feet in the first playoff, so they went back to the 18th tee for the second extra hole, which Dufner won by hitting the green in two strokes and tapping home a short birdie putt after Els' birdie attempt from the fringe narrowly missed.

The 6-foot-3 Els, who goes by the nickname "The Big Easy," hasn't won on the PGA Tour since the 2010 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, a little more than two years ago.

He did not have a bogey in the final round or the playoff, and could have celebrated his 19th career PGA Tour title in the Big Easy if he could have made a birdie putt of a little less than 6 feet on the first playoff hole.

"It was a nice little charge I made and, you know, nice to catch the leader," Els said. "I had a chance to win the tournament with a 6-footer and missed it, but I made quite a few putts on the back nine to keep myself in it. ... Hit the ball pretty well today ? no bogeys on the final round ? so there's a lot of positives."

On the second playoff hole, Els' tee shot went into a fairway bunker, and his second shot landed 137 yards from the pin. His third shot landed on the fringe, nearly 19 feet from the pin, but he nearly saved birdie from there, his putt missing by 2 inches.

Dufner then made his birdie putt, and in his typically low-key way, briefly raised both arms to acknowledge the cheering crowd before casually walking off the green to accept some congratulatory hugs.

After becoming the seventh player to take his first career PGA Tour triumph in New Orleans since 2002, Dufner called it a "great wedding present" for himself and his bride to be.

"It helps with paying for the wedding, obviously," added Dufner, who earned $1,152,000. "They're a little more expensive than I thought or had imagined. ... It'll be a big celebration not only for our marriage but also for my first victory out on the Tour."

Luke Donald shot a 67 to finish third at 17 under, and move past Rory McIlroy for the No. 1 ranking in the world.

Defending Zurich Classic champ Bubba Watson, playing for the first time since a life-changing win at the Masters over Easter weekend, entered the final round eight shots off the lead. He was unable to mount a charge after bogeys on his first two holes. He wound up tied for 18th at 11 under, a solid outing by most standards, but one of his worst finishes of the year.

"All in all, pretty good week being tired, coming back for the first time after winning the Masters, all this different media attention," Watson said. "It's something you got to get used to. (It) wears on you, tires you out. Somehow I finished ? I'm in the top 20. A lot of guys wished they did that."

Els and Dufner were tied at 19 under after 11 holes. Els made par on each of his final seven holes of regulation. Dufner made par on his final eight, none more difficult than on 16, when he hit into water, but salvaged par with a 44-foot putt.

Els' 17-foot birdie putt on 18 missed by about an inch, opening the door for Dufner to win in regulation if he could birdie the 585-yard hole to cap his fourth round.

While Els was on the practice green preparing for a possible playoff, Dufner chipped on to set up a potential winning putt from 10 1/2 feet.

Although he could not convert, pushing the ball about a foot past the right edge of the hole, he made up for it in the playoff.

"Obviously, I haven't had a great history in playoffs last year," Dufner said. "It kind of enters your mind: 'I'm in another playoff. Am I going to be able to get this done?'"

He won't have to ask himself that question any more.

Jarid2 may break the Polycomb silence

Jarid2 may break the Polycomb silence [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-Apr-2012

Stowers scientists use fruit flies to reveal unknown function of a transcriptional regulator of development and cancer

KANSAS CITY, MOHistorically, fly and human Polycomb proteins were considered textbook exemplars of transcriptional repressors, or proteins that silence the process by which DNA gives rise to new proteins. Now, work by a team of researchers at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research challenges that dogma.

In a cover story in the May 2012 issue of the journal Molecular and Cellular Biology, Stowers Investigator Ali Shilatifard, Ph.D., and his team report that in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster a component of the Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), which is called Jarid2, occasionally activates gene expression.

Polycomb proteins, a group of chromatin-binding factors, were initially found to control how developing fly embryos undergo segmentation. Subsequently, researchers discovered that humans also express a gaggle of proteins resembling fly Polycomb factors and that these proteins have crucially significant roles: under normal conditions PRC2 proteins are required for the differentiation of stem cells, but when overactive, act as oncogenes in lymphoma, breast, and prostate cancer.

"Our approach is to use Drosophila as a model to learn how Polycomb group proteins function in the context of cancer," says Shilatifard, who studies mechanisms underlying leukemia in yeast, fruit flies, and mammalian cells. "In this study, we found that a new component of the PRC2 complex, Jarid2, maintains repression of some genes, but also potentially activates other target genes."

In the usual fly-to-human discovery continuum, the current study represents a species turnaround. While investigators analyzing mammalian stem cells had shown that Jarid2 was an important component of PRC2 in mammals, its activity remained unknown in Drosophila. To determine whether it acted together with Polycomb PRC2 in flies, the Stowers team, led by postdoctoral researcher Hans-Martin Herz, Ph.D., applied a proteomic approach to enumerate every Drosophila protein binding to Jarid2 in fly embryos.

Predictably, they found that fly Jarid2 associates with the same protein suspects as it does in mammals. "Previous mammalian studies reported opposing findings in regard to the role of Jarid2 in the PRC2 complex," says Herz. "Some papers said Jarid2 inhibited PRC2 activity while others claimed Jarid2 activated it."

To settle the issue, the group undertook genome-wide profiling by scanning the entire fruit fly genome to determine where Jarid2 and other members of the PRC2 complex localized on DNA. Overall, the proteins showed similar distribution patterns along chromosomes, hinting that PRC2 complexes containing Jarid2 regulate many of the same genes. However, some genes known to be PRC2 targets showed very little occupancy by Jarid2, an observation that suggested Jarid2 does not share all of the characteristics of a core member of the PRC2 complex.

Combining state-of-the-art genomic approaches with classic fly genetics, the group then defined what Jarid2 actually does molecularly in cells. To do that, they compared gene expression profiles of larvae of two distinct types of genetically manipulated flies: those that lacked only Jarid2 expression and flies that lacked expression of a core PRC2 protein. The rationale was that if Jarid2 and the complex shared the same targets and acted in lockstep, those profiles should be identical.

Two surprising observations emerged from that study. First, in Jarid2 mutant flies, some Jarid2/PRC2 co-bound genes exceeded their normal expression and others were inhibited, the latter suggesting that Jarid2 does not always repress a target. Secondly, the pattern of gene expression observed in the Jarid2 flies differed significantly from that seen in the PRC2 mutants, meaning that whatever Jarid2 does biochemically does not mimic what other PRC2 proteins do.

"Our findings challenge the general idea that PRC2 has only a repressive role," says Herz. "In fact, they suggest that PRC2 and Jarid2 may regulate different genes in specific contexts."

Recent reports implicate Jarid2 in diseases as diverse as multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. But most significantly for the Shilatifard lab are studies linking both PRC2 and Jarid2 to myeloid cancers such as leukemia. "The theme of our lab is factors that regulate the yin and yang of transcription," says Shilatifard, citing his interest in both of the Polycomb proteins and their polar opposites, the Trithorax activator proteinsinitially characterized in flies and also linked to leukemia. "Our overall goal is to gain insight into both."

Eurozone inflation eases to 2.6 percent

(AP) ? Inflation in the 17 countries that use the euro fell to an annual 2.6 percent in April, but was still higher than analysts' expectations and presents a continuing headache for the European Central Bank.

The figure fell from 2.7 percent in March, but remained above the 2.5 percent average forecast.

Inflation has remained stuck well above the European Central Bank's goal of just under 2 percent, a target that it now says won't be reached until early 2013.

The ECB says the rate remains high because of higher oil prices and taxes in some countries and not because of inflationary pressures from the economy.

The stubborn inflation rate is important to the eurozone debt crisis because it discourages the ECB bank from cutting its 1 percent benchmark interest rate. Lower rates can spur growth, but can worsen inflation. ECB President Mario Draghi has stressed that the bank will remain faithful to its mandate under the European Union treaty of fighting inflation as its first priority.

Lack of flexibility on interest rates could become more of an issue as worries increase about the depth of the eurozone's economic downturn. The economy of the 17-country group that uses the euro shrank 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year. Recent economic indicators ? such as a disappointing survey of purchasing managers showing lower economic activity ? have raised fears the dip may be deeper.

European Central Bank data Monday added another downbeat note, as loans to the private sector rose by a meager 0.6 percent in March, another sign of weak economic activity. The ECB has said that its ?1 trillion ($1.32 trillion) injection of emergency loans to commercial banks in December and February have improved financial institutions access to funding ? but that businesses are not asking for loans because of shaky economic prospects.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's father dies at 102

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Benzion Netanyahu, historian, Zionist activist and influential father of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, died Monday in his Jerusalem home, the Israeli leader's office said. He was 102.

Born Benzion Mileikowsky in Warsaw, Poland, Netanyahu was a devout follower of revisionist Zionist leader Zeev Jabotinsky, who advocated Jewish military strength and the establishment of a Jewish state on both sides of the Jordan River. Netanyahu served as his personal aide until Jabotinsky's death in 1940.

He then edited right-wing Jewish publications and earned a Ph.D in history from Dropsie College in Philadelphia. Later, he was a professor of Jewish history and Hebrew literature at the University of Denver and Cornell University, where he served as chairman of the department of Semitic languages and literature.

He was best known in academic circles for his research into the medieval inquisition against the Jews of Spain.

Due to his academic career, his family frequently moved between the United States and Israel.

Netanyahu and his wife, Tzila, had three sons: Yonatan, Benjamin and Ido, all of whom served in the same elite Israeli military commando unit. Yonatan, known as Yoni, commanded the Sayeret Matkal unit and was killed in action during a daring 1976 hostage rescue operation in Entebbe, Uganda.

Following his death, Netanyahu returned to Israel full-time. His middle son Benjamin, nicknamed Bibi, went into politics and was elected prime minister of Israel in 1996 and again in 2009. Iddo, the youngest of the three, is a radiologist and writer.

Netanyahu is believed to have had great influence over his son's politics and openly criticized him when his government made concessions toward the Palestinians.

Several analysts speculated that Benjamin Netanyahu was emotionally unable to sign off on a comprehensive peace deal with Israel's Arabs neighbors as long as his father was still alive, a notion the prime minister dismissed as "psychobabble."

In newspaper interviews late in life, Benzion Netanyahu was forceful in his skepticism of Mideast peace.

"The tendency to conflict is in the essence of the Arab. He is an enemy by essence. His personality won't allow him any compromise or agreement. It doesn't matter what kind of resistance he will meet, what price he will pay. His existence is one of perpetual war," he told the Maariv daily in 2009. "The Arab citizens' goal is to destroy us. They don't deny that they want to destroy us."

Canada's oldest microbrewer brings seasonal to Ontario

If I were to tell you that craft brewing in Canada started under a bridge you might get the wrong impression, but it's absolutely true.

In 1984, Granville Island Brewing opened its doors in Vancouver, under the girders of the Granville Bridge. The first beer the company produced was Granville Island Lager, which has remained in its lineup to this day.

The brewery has grown and expanded from that initial brew over the last 28 years in interesting and unexpected ways, going through changes in ownership up until its eventual purchase by Molson Coors subsidiary Creemore Springs in 2009.

The last decade has marked significant expansion with a new, larger brewing facility in Kelowna, B.C., where the majority of Granville Island's beers are now produced. While the original brewery is still there, it's currently used mostly for brewing seasonal and speciality beers. It also hosts three tours daily, enlightening craft beer fans and tourists alike.

The focus on seasonal and specialty beers has become prodigious, more than doubling the number of year-round offerings produced by Granville Island. When I spoke to brewmaster Vern Lambourne, he was in the midst of mashing in a Cascadian Dark Ale, the next of the brewery's limited-release series. Typically, the mash is one of the best times to talk to a brewer, who would otherwise be occupied by staring thoughtfully into the distance while the brew day gets started.

Currently, Granville Island is experimenting with wider distribution interprovincially. Their English Bay Pale Ale, which had previously been available in B.C. and Alberta, launched in Ontario to little critical reception in 2010. Possibly, this was due to the large number of Pale Ales already available in Ontario. The style is a craft brewing staple and one additional example, even if it's a good one, will not grab the market by the lapels and shout "drink me."

This time around the company is bringing one of its seasonal offerings: Robson Street Hefeweizen, which received a silver medal at the 2010 World Beer Championships.

"Most of the flavour comes from the yeast," said Lambourne. There are clove and banana flavours, as are to be expected in a Bavarian wheat beer, but also a subtle hint of orange. It pours a cloudy light orange colour with a fluffy white head. The cloudiness is due to the protein from the substantial amount of wheat used to brew the beer. It hovers between sweet and mildly tart on the palate, with a dry finish.

In terms of pairing with food, it goes well with such brunch dishes as eggs benedict and stands up to foods with a smoky flavour.

"It's especially good with lox," said Lambourne, and spicy Thai food as well. If you were a Bavarian, you might want to try it with weisswurst and sauerkraut.

The arrival of Granville Island's Robson Street Hefeweizen in Ontario signals an interesting willingness to experiment with expansion without resorting to the use of flagship brands. While Granville Island has won several awards for its regular lineup over the last few years, this does not seem to be an attempt to anchor a brand permanently on the shelf in Ontario. It's a summer listing which will be available for a limited time.

This is a good sign because it means that we may see other specialty beers from Granville Island in Ontario in the near future. Their specialties are already available in Alberta, but this is a much larger leap of faith, which adds to what is becoming a far more diverse representation of Canadian beer across the country.

Granville Island is building a bridge instead of just sitting under one.
