BOSTON ? One and done. The Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship reign came to an end 2:57 in sudden death overtime on Wednesday night, when the Washington Capitals? Joel Ward knocked a rebound into the net past the Bruins? Tim Thomas, giving the Caps a 2-1 win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at the TD Garden. Ward?s play was created by a break in by former Bruin Mike Knuble, whose backhander was initialy stopped by Thomas (27 saves). Bruin Benoit Pouliout tried to send the puck into the Boston zone for a line change but Knuble grabbed it instead. A minute into the overtime. Patrice Bergeron missed an empty side of the net by inches. It was one of the closest, if not the closest playoff series in the history of Stanley Cup hockey as all seven games would be decided by one goal, the first time ever in a Stanley Cup playoff series. The Bruins outshot the Capitals 31-25 in the first 60 minutes, but scoring was obviously at a premium. Things were tense already in the third period when Boston?s Patrice Bergeron hooked Alexander Semin on a Washington odd-man rush at the 11 minute mark of the third period, the Caps first power play of the night. Thomas (25 saves in regulation) came up big on Alexander Ovechkin, whose initial shot was blocked by a stickless Dennis Seidenberg.
