Head, Library Technology (#401070)
The James E. Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) seeks an innovative, collaborative and student-centered individual to lead its Technology Department. The Head, Library Technology will help develop the vision for technology operations in a changing environment, plan for the continued advancement of library computing capabilities, and guide strategic directions, policies, and technology priorities throughout the Library.
This individual will coordinate with all library departments to ensure effective deployment and use of technology, serve as a member of the Technology Access Fee Committee, and coordinate with the University?s Information Technology Division on campus-wide programs and issues that affect the library?s systems architecture. The Head will foster professional development, collegial relationships, and continuing education of department staff.
The department employs 3 administrative/technical staff, 3 classified staff and more than 20 temporary and student employees who manage the following: Innovative Interfaces (III) Millennium ILS and Encore discovery platform; equipment and software for public use; 370 desktop computers and 80 laptops as well as mobile devices, copiers, and scanners for staff use; 2 computer classrooms with 64 student computers and 2 public meeting spaces with media equipment; a public service desk for the circulation of equipment; the library?s Digital Media Studio and a growing program for Digital Initiatives; and other systems elements including ILLIAD, EZproxy, and building security. A migration to III Sierra is expected in 2013.
This is a 12-month, tenure-track position. All library faculty are expected to meet promotion and tenure standards.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Dean of the Walker Library, the Head, Library Technology will:
Contribute to library?wide planning, policy making, development and assessment of services
Evaluate and select hardware and software systems for the library
Support the library?s website by managing internal servers, coordinating interconnections with Omni Update-OU Campus, the campus content management system, and providing technical support to website content providers
Maintain a secure environment for employee and public use of the campus network and library technology infrastructure
Develop annual objectives for the department and monitor progress toward meeting them
Evaluate lead administrators in the department and supervise evaluation of other staff
Maintain current knowledge of trends and issues affecting library and university computing systems
Engage with national organizations that track developing issues affecting the technologies employed by academic libraries
Required Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master?s degree; a minimum of five years, post-degree experience in an academic or research library; at least two years supervisory experience; at least two years of experience as an ILS administrator; previous experience in a position with responsibilities for purchasing and supporting computer hardware; effective communication skills and ability to foster partnerships and work collaboratively; ability to meet promotion and tenure standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in computer science or related field; experience with Innovative Interfaces Millennium ILS, SunGard Banner; and Omni Update-OU Campus content management system; experience with languages for web page creation, including xml, css, php, and others; experience with server management using Linux, Windows, and/or Mac operating systems; knowledge of emerging technologies; knowledge of open source options in library settings.
Salary and Benefits: Highly competitive salary, academic rank commensurate with qualifications. Generous benefits include full-paid State or TIAA/CREF retirement, 24 days annual leave, 12 days sick leave, and 13 paid holidays. 12 month tenure-track appointment with faculty rank.
